San Bruno, CA - For the last five years, Wowowee was the favorite show of The Filipino Channel (TFC) subscribers and retirees Luningning Gementera and Dolly Aguilar. Even from an ocean away, they said they felt like they were part of the program.
“Malaking bagay ang Wowowee kasi nalilibang ako, para kong may kasama sa bahay, nakikipagtawanan sa kanila, kung may iyakan, nakikiiyak na rin, saka natutuwa ako’t maraming taong lumiligaya,” said Gementera. (Wowowee meant a lot to me, because it entertained me. It was as if I had a companion at home, I laughed with them, and if there was crying, I cried with them. And I was happy that the show made many people happy.” said Gementera.
Wowowee successfully combined its game show format with melodrama. Apart from the fun and games, the show’s biggest draw were impoverished contestants who bared their souls and their dreams on television. Contestant Amerasian Barry Bogert Junior found a benefactor and immigrated to the U.S. after a tearful appeal to his long-lost father during a guesting on Wowowee.
“Alam ko sa atin, marami ang mahihirap. At least natutulungan sila ni Willie, napapasaya sila” (I know there are a lot of poor people back home. At least Willie was able to help them and make them happy), said Aguilar
Tragedy hit Wowowee in February 2006, when 71 fans were killed during a stampede before the show’s first anniversary special at the ULTRA stadium in Pasig City. After a brief hiatus, Wowowee returned to the air, delighting loyal viewers. In the U.S., tens of thousands of Pinoys watched the show’s staging in Nevada, New York, Chicago and other key cities.
The Philippine Department of Justice recommended the filing of charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide and physical injuries against 17 ABS-CBN executives and employees in October 2006. However, the noontime show bounced back from the ULTRA stampede, and battled it out with rival show, “Eat Bulaga” for ratings supremacy. At the height of its popularity, Wowowee enjoyed an audience share of over 20 percent.
But Willie Revillame’s on-air demeanor was another issue. In August 2009, Revillame had to go on leave following the public outcry when, during his show, he criticized and stopped a live shot of former president Cory Aquino’s funeral cortege.
Revillame once again drew criticism for using the airwaves for his own agenda. In May, he demanded that the network fire entertainment writer and broadcaster Joebert Sucaldito for continually criticizing him and the show’s contestants. While on indefinite break from the show, Revillame later asked to be released from his contract.
Male guest hosts alternately took Revillame’s place until ABS-CBN announced a replacement show, “Pilipinas Win Na Win” last week. Critics were only too happy to learn that Wowowee and its controversial host were taken off the air. Filipino American immigration lawyer and columnist Rodel Rodis often complained about what he described as the culture of mendicancy that the show promoted. “Wowowee to me should have really been ‘kawawa-we’ because of the way (Revillame) was presenting it. So we’re finally glad that someone like him who has corrupted our culture is gone,” Rodis said.
Initial audience reaction to “Pilipinas Win na Win,” headlined by Kris Aquino and Robin Padilla, was mixed.
Gementera said she was impressed by hosts Aquino and Padilla. “Maganda naman ngayon at simula pa, masaya, maganda ang intro nila saka talagang nakikita live na live yung audience. Tingan natin.” (It was good, fun, their intro was nice and the audience was really live. We’ll see…”) Aguilar said she thought it was just like Wowowee “but without Willie.”
While they welcomed the new show, Gementera and Aguilar found it hard to say goodbye to their old favorite. Gementera waxed nostalgic: “Nalulungkot ako, dahil sa loob ng 5 taon, siya nang bahagi ng buhay mo, parte ng buhay mo.” (I am sad because for 5 years, that show a part of me, a part of my life).
To the very end, these viewers laughed and cried with the show that has changed noontime television forever.

boomers here in Calgary are avid fans of Willie. They are really sad when Willie was on leave and patient enough to be a TFC subscriber. The last show of WOWOWEE I CRIED A LOT SPECIALLY WHEN THEY SHOW WILLIE. My Mom, auntie and lots of freinds and relatives here was heartbroken
That last show make us more missed WILLIE the most. I sure agree to boycott TFC never mine watching PWNW. We will never like Kris & Robin and
never replaced WILLIE in many hearts of people all over the world, no matter
what bad things say WE REALLY DON’T CARE AT ALL. WE LOVE & ADORE
WOWOWEE WILLIE. WE really hate Kris, she manipulates everyone around
her life, liar, plastic, user, spoilled brat, trouble maker, bad influence and sure a
trash in Showbizz. Robin is really boring, trying hard will not work on us, just
be an action star or go to MIndanao. I feel sorry for Pokwang & Mariel they are
just a doormat in the show which we never even watch at all. We are just waiting for Agua Bendita and rest of the Teleserye to finished but I guesse we just watch it Online or Youtube, We also like Rated K, TV Patrol, Failon Ngayon & Balitang America and proud to say we respect most of the Anchors.
Pinagtyagaan lang namin panoorin Tayoy Magkakalayo because of the storyline
and the rest of the cast were good & respectable. Sinayang nyo lang ang binayad nyo kay Kris na kahit ano pa ang ibalot nya sa sarili she will forever a
slut jinx to the nation & showbizz we have no respect at all to whatever connected to her. To the management of ABS-CBN – you really breaks people
hearts, would you please listen to your viewers and all the people who were loyal as a TFC subscriber before you blew them all. People LOVES WILLIE

respect to your board and management abolish, dismiss, cancel, replace,cut,
change, destroy or simply OFF THE AIR PWNW. Please do yourself a favor bring back WOWOWEE and for the record they even love Luis or suggestion
put WILLIE/LUIS and the rest of the Gang. People can always tell Shaw Cable
to change a Network from TFC to GMA. Shaw Cable always listen to people,
they value their customer. People will always look for other option especially
if they are hurt so bad. My MOM always swear all the time when it reminds her
that WOWOWEE was change to PWNW. She said she does not mind Eat
Bulaga just not to see Kris with all her tricks crookedness what she does in
her life she will never change, She fools everyone. Please help your Pinoy
kababayan to heal their broken hearts if you have a heart at all. Do something

Kawawa naman ang 97 years old na mother ko parang nagdeteriorate ang health niya mula nong nawala na si Willie sa Wowowee. Hindi na siya masaya at pinagdadasal niya na ibalik ang Wowee with Willie as the main host. She has convinced us (5 children in the USA) to cancel our TFC subscriptions and just watch GMA. We must all organize and boycott against abs-cbn’s pilipinas win na win show!!..From the comments I’ve read from this article,I think It’s safe to say most tfc’s agree that pilipinas win na win is a boring manipulated show. The management of abs-cbn think they can dictate anything they want with all of the tfc subscribers worldwide. Tfc subscribers work hard for their money here in the states. We try and support abs-cbn by paying high premiums every month for our subscriptions. We subscribe to enjoy watching WOWOWEE!. But what does abs-cbn management do! They destroy the happiness that wowowee has given us for the past 5 years. They then replace it with a show, (win na win) that is so boring, un organized, and so un entertaining that it insults and mocks us. Further more they put two un appealing, un entertaining, and boring hosts, (Kris
aquino and robin padilla to lead it. What the hell are you thinking abs-cbn!!? Wake up and see what you’ve done.. This show will not last. So many people have criticized Willie about how he behaves in the show wowowee e.g. flirting with the ladies of the audience/guests ,etc) but what about the morals of Kris Aquino. She has two boys from two different fathers and who knows another one’s coming from another guy! I am going to terminate my subscription to TFC.

Tama naman ang sinasabi ng iba na boring ang win na win, trying hard si kris at hindi bagay sa kanya it. lahat ng show na tungkot sa ganitong show ay hindi tumatagay si kris.at si robin ay hindi rin bagay dito. hindi naman si robin ng shooting ng pelikula.at parang gusto niya mapansing da hil lahat ng katabi niya ay gusto niyang halikan. pag katabi si mariel ay parang gusto nilang maghalikan, Bakit hindi nalang ibalik si luis (lucky) magaling ito. magugustohan ng tao si luis. kapalit ni willie kaya ibalik na lang ito.tanggalin na lang si kris at robin.
Win na Win – what a boring show. I disconnect my subscription to TFC. Sayang lang magpasubscribe sa TFC if they continue this show. Bring back WOWOWEE and Willie if you don’t want to loose you subscribers. Wake up ABS-CBN. This show sucks!!!!!

Pilipinas win na win boring talaga. May tama ka ang nagsabi na Kris alis now na. sigi ppMagkapuso nalang tayo dahil hindi ma arte ang hosts sa kapuso. Kris and Mariel walang ginawa di magpacute lang kay Robin. Sa bagay sanay si Kris sa may asawa. Dapat ang title ng show ni Kris ay Asawa ng Bayan. kawawang James Yap dahil tapos na ang election iniwan na ni Kris. Kris manggagamit. Masyadong ambisuya at concious sa camera dapat kay mayroon sariling camera para lang talaga sa kanya.

Three episode na ng Pilipina Win na Win ang napanood ko. Walang appeal sa akin ang show. BORING di ka matatawa. Dinagdag nila si Kris Aquino na di marunong magpatawa. Masyadong korning magarte. Yong lalaki nila si Padilla ba yon. di niya alam kong ano ang rule niya sa show. It’s about time to switch to other TV station like GMA.
I am sure there were some legal maneuvers that resulted to the cancellation of Wowowee. It was doing well even without Willie R. There was no reason to cancel. Management just has not said anything.
Kung ako si Pokwang I’d be hurt by this. She should be the main HOST of Win Na Win. They do not need Kris “Fake” Aquino. As you can tell by the thread here nobody likes her.

Walang kuwenta and new show “Pilipinas Win na Win”. Hindi mag-tatagal ito. Anything Kris Aquino handles does not last like Pilipinas Game Ka Na ba, or Deal or No Deal, etc. Mas boring pa itong new show and Robin Padilla wala naman yan talent kundi sa movies lang.
