Christian televangelist Eddie Villanueva ran for president in the 2004 elections and finished last. Brother Eddie, as he came to be known, was an activist who opposed martial law in the 70′s.
But at the height of his involvement with the leftist movement, Villanueva said he had a life-changing encounter with God. He became a preacher and founded the Jesus Is Lord church in 1978. His ministry has grown to over 3 million all over the world.
Last year, Villanueva went on leave as JIL Spiritual Director to once again run for president. Righteous governance is his campaign battlecry that has reverberated to his members all over the world.
In Los Angeles, JIL members led by Villanueva’s sister, pastor Belen Kuwaye are actively campaigning for his presidential bid, organizing prayer rallies and other activities. Belen, who is Villanueva’s strongest supporter, says, “All he has is his love of God at saka what God wants him to do. And sa buhay nya out of nothing, nag rise up siya to be the leader of one of the largest organizations in the Philippines, it’s an international organization. It takes something to be able to achieve that kind of accomplishment.”
Pasadena Pastor Michael McKinney first met Villanueva when he was starting his ministry in Bocaue, Bulacan. McKinney recalls, “I had no idea what God was going to do with this young man. But I felt that he was a man, even though he was younger, who was set apart, for a grander purpose, like a destiny.”
Jay Valencia is a staunch Catholic, but he believes Villanueva is the best hope for the country at this time. Valencia, who heads Bangon Pilipinas-USA says, “Panahon na para magkaron tayo ng presidente na malinis ang puso at walang hangad kundi yung ikabubuti ng sambayanang Pilipino.”
Other Filipinos are supporting the JIL founder because they say he touched their lives in ways that strengthened their faith in God and in themselves. Marivic Duenas says, “I need to support him in so many ways kasi na change ang life ng aming family, ng buong angkan namin. Sya rin ang nag-prophesize na makakapunta ako sa America.” Another JIL member, Mar Polonia says he plans to return to the Philippines next month to campaign for Brother Eddie.
In the latest popularity survey among presidential candidates, Villanueva ranked sixth in a field of 10 candidates, with a 2 % rating. But his followers scoff at these surveys, saying they believe, with God on their side, Villanueva can beat the odds. Virgil Nicasio says, “The Holy Spirit is powerful! He can change the hearts of millions; instead of writing the name of Noynoy at the polling places, they’ll write Eddie Villanueva. I believe there’s nothing impossible with God.”
