Oakland, CA - A new medical center in Oakland is open thanks to the stimulus package. It’s expected patients include the uninsured, the underinsured, and the undocumented of Alameda County.
The Frank Kiang Medical Center expects to serve about 5,000 patients, especially undocumented immigrants who have been too scared too see doctors in the past.
Inday Cascarino, whose worked for Alameda County’s Asian Health Service for nearly 20 years says: “A lack of immigration papers or status has become inhibiting to many Filipinos despite the fact they are the ones in need of services.”
Undocumented patients will need to bring identification such as a visa or passport, and proof that they live within Alameda County such as a utility bill or pay stubs. Undocumented patients will get services for free or at little cost. Low income patients will be enrolled in subsidized state or local health coverage based on their income and family size.
The center says it provides services in nine Asian languages to make immigrants feel more comfortable.
The Frank Kiang Medical Center is a product of a million dollar grant from the stimulus package. With more patients expected to be served, more health care jobs will be created. Sherry Hirota, the CEO of Asian Health Services expects about 33 jobs to be created because of the health center.

They’re go our taxes, someday America will wake up that they belong to a third world country, which is already starting to some of the states including california. thats because of this illegal immigration.
Undocumented means they are here Il-Legally….they should be treated and processed for return to their home country with their home country paying the deportation costs. We Filipinos are sometimes our own worse enemy. Do not side with these illegal Mexicans…we have family waiting on quotas and for every amnesty provided a Mexican, Chinese, ah yes even illegal Filipino..that means someone’s Filipino family member will not get that quota and they are doing the process the proper way…WAKE-UP!
There is no doubt AHS is giving quality healthcare. But the question is, how long can a Hospital survive giving away FREE healthcare to ” undocumented immigrants”. You cannot deny them services just as Hospitals in Arizona cannot deny them either. But huge influx of them is already crippling their economy. The stimulus may have help this Hospital survive for awhile. But for how long?
FYI. Asian Health Services cater to all immigrants and citizens alike who has limited access to health care due to language barriers including the Filipino community. The new health center, Frank Kiang Medical Center, will serve low-income, uninsured individuals and families who reside within Alameda County. We may be able to assist new patients to look for health programs that they can qualify for based on their health need and household income. The article is somewhat misleading because AHS not only provides healthcare to “undocumented immigrants” but to everyone regardless of age, gender, and language spoken.
In response to the comment above, Asian Health Services renders quality health care and a model of how community health centers should be like. AHS is a solid proof that the tax that we all pay is put to good use.

this is one of the reasons why Arizona cannot continue the huge influx of undocumented ( who are we kidding?) … Illegal Aliens.
Now, this Hospital can float thanks to the stimulus. But we all know this method is unsustainable. They will run out of money soon. What will they do? Ask for more? Which I’m sure Obama will be willing to give from his slush fund(Stimulus). Wait till 2012 election time. He will spend the remaining 40% of the stimulus. Just as long as you vote for his ” second coming”.
