Manny the Movie Guy on the 82nd Oscars

Manny the Movie Guy reflects on the historic 82nd Academy Awards. So how did Manny’s predictions hold up?

Hey Manny, so how was your batting average for this year’s Oscars?

MANNY: Actually, of all the top nominees, I got 7 out of 8. I missed one. (Manny predicted “Up in the Air” would win for Best Adapted Screenplay.) But I’m very proud of my batting average, because the movie that I was way behind for, “The Hurt Locker,” won.

What were the biggest surprises last night?

MANNY: “Up in the Air,” which I loved dearly—Jason Reitman co-wrote and directed the script—it was the Oscar frontrunner to win best adapted screenplay, but last night it didn’t win. Instead the award went to Geoffrey Fletcher for “Precious.”

I was also surprised about the winner of Best Foreign Language. “Le Prophete” from France was the frontrunner to win, and if it didn’t win, people expected “The White Ribbon” from Germany to get it. But instead it went to Argentina for the movie “El Secreto de Sus Ojos.”

What was your favorite moment during the Oscars?

MANNY: My favorite moment is really when Kathryn Bigelow won. It’s about time that a woman won best director. For the last 81 years, Ms. Bigelow was only the fourth woman to ever be nominated, and so I’m really, really glad she won.
