Fil-Am the center of hostage situation in Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS, NV — A machete-wielding Filipino American man is in custody, after barricading himself in his home, and taking his own daughter hostage.
Police say it all started with a domestic dispute.
On Wednesday afternoon, Las Vegas Metro responded to a domestic violence incident involving a male with a machete in the 7000 block of Clearwater Avenue — prompting the surrounding streets to close down.
The suspect, identified by police as 36-year-old James Spirig, was armed with a large knife and threatened to kill family members.
Spirig barricaded himself inside his southwest Las Vegas home, and took his 12-year-old daughter hostage.
SWAT officers and crisis negotiators were called to the scene.
After 3 hours of negotiations, police were able to Spirig into custody without incident. His daughter was not harmed.
Spirig remains in jail as he faces domestic battery, four counts of assault with a deadly weapon, first degree child abuse, neglect and endangerment, and trespassing and obstruction.
