SAN FRANCISCO, CA—More than 30 supporters of Philippine presidential candidate Manny Villar met in San Francisco to get an update on the campaign and strategize for the votes of absentee voters in California.

A recent Pulse Asia survey found Villar to be the most trusted presidential candidate. Villar received a 70 percent trust rating, beating rival Noynoy Aquino who was a close second with 64 percent.

Aquino supporters found this worrisome, but the survey result did not surprise Villar supporters. Many of them trust him because they believe he’s one of them.

Villar, who rose from poverty to become one of the Philippines top 10 richest men, has been campaigning on a pro-poor agenda.

“Unang una yung kanyang upbringing from the time na started from the slum area in Tondo, to the time that he embedded himself in Congress up to leading the way in the senate, marami siyang nagawa. He’s a man of action,” said Ramon Mabunag, a Villar supporter.

“Una, nanggaling sa mahirap sa Tondo, kami taga Tondo kami siyempre alam namin ang buhay don,” said another supporter, Tess Gregorio.

Ray Satorre, who heads the Northern California Villar for President movement, says they must work harder as the campaign heats up.

“Nagme-meeting kami para kay Villar, para tawagan ang mga kamag anak nila sa Pilipinas,” Satorre said.

With just a little over 589 thousand overseas absentee voters worldwide, Villar supporters are campaigning by way of text messages, email and phone calls to their relatives who receive their dollar remittances regularly.

They’ve dismissed as a hoax a malicious email that spread on the internet, claiming Villar owned a palatial home in Salt Lake City. Villar’s relatives say the senator owns only one modest apartment unit in Anaheim, California.

“Black propaganda for my cousin Manny. It’s not true! I know Manny only has a house in Anaheim, where the Villars gather during Christmas,” said Ferdie Villar, the senator’s cousin.

Supporters of Villar believe they now have the momentum, and they’re ready to battle any smear campaign.Supporters expect more of the same as the campaign heats up which is why they are intensifying their efforts at convincing more relatives and friends back home to support their chosen candidate.

  1. Maybe, People of the Philippines should be more keen and vigilant regarding the economic status of the country?Philippines is the most riches country in the whole world. Why we are poor?Wherein, 128 countries has a big debt in our country? Why USA is the main Author of AMLA?what’s the purpose?to make Philippines more poorer? It’s becoz of the people behind the scene, the central bank, the business tycoons, the senator, the congress and the President of the Philippines! How many billions of money we HAVE? Kumikita ng almost triple of interest in a day?Look! 3. knarfeh says:

MGA KABABAYAN! Be intelligent in voting for our new next President. NOYNOY AQUINO fits in this position. Nothing to elaborate why because it is in his blood. If Villar will be the next President, nothing will happen. Still the never ending corruption will continue. All his money that has been spend during the campaign, ofcourse kunin niya lahat and even more. I don’t believe that he is the most trusted compared to Nonoy. Money works for everything you wanted.

  4. M. Pacheco says:

Arroyo na abuse of power. Ang understanding ko kaya
tumatakbo siya as a House of Representative(nakakahiya!) para to protect herself for possible charges for her administration. Parang guilty na siya. No! for Villar , tuta ni Arrroyo.

  5. Magin P says:

I just want to remind to all our kababayan when president cory passed away. Noynoy has no plan to run as president but, during her funeral the masang filipino shouted that they want noynoy to run and to continued cory legacy for the good government with NO CORRUPTION. He think those hundred of times before he make his final desisyon. And now he is running, lets give our deepest and full support to his candidacy. This is the time na sanay maging matalino na tayo at upang ng sa ganon ay mabago naman ang takbo ng ating government. marami nang naging sacrifices ang aquino family from ( NINOY – CORY ) now its the time naman na ipakita natin ang ating full support kay NOYNOY di lang sa salita, at sanay gawin natin ito sa oras ng Halalan this coming May 2010. SALUDO KAMI SAYO NOYNOY.

  10. MERNARD ADTO says:

  11. PETER JABIDO says:

Yes Manny Villar was poor and became rich. THE BIG QUESTION IS HOW DID HE BECOME RICH? He will not even face the Senate inquiry into the C5 controversy. Part of his wealth he could have earned “honestly” but when he became a government official he used his office to further enrich himself, and he was not president yet. How much more if he is already in Mlacanang? Surely he would become worse than Marcos and Gloria combined. Gloria Arroyo already showed him that congress and the Philippine military can be bought and she has used her office for her and her family’s interests, manny villar undeniably will follow her evil example.

  12. HR Rebueno says:

Ms. Ging Reyes, please elaborate on the details of O.A.V. I also would like to communicate with Ray Satorre who heads the Northern California Villar for President movement as I would like to do the same movement here in the midwest specifically Texas,Kansas,Oklahoma, Arkansas & Louisiana.
    Thanks! HR Rebueno (cell 713.865-0077)

  13. I understand that you are supporting Villar, because allegedly you are from Tondo. If he becomes Pres. of the Phils. do you thing Glorio Arroyo will be prosecuted of all her wrongdoings and corruption? Do you think Villar will not become more richer which is obviously his goal?Do you you really think he is pro-poor. Being a very rich person, did he help anybody when he was still a civilian?
