A Filipino’s hurricane-proof home in Florida
DAVIE, FLORIDA — For Filipinos, their home is sacred ground, their prized possession.
Using some foresight, a Filipino-American in Florida decided to make his home disaster proof, when Hurricane Irma put this home to the test.
Mario Magcalas his fortress can withstand 160 miles per hour, but Irma at one point even reached a nuclear speed of 185 miles per hour sustained winds.
Magcalas even opened his home as a safe shelter to close friends, who are living near the waters that were expected to see 10 feet of storm surges.
